Comps: Bringing Out the Dead meets Dark (Netflix show)
Review: I had high hopes for this movie after watching the trailer, which is intriguing to say the least. But, unfortunately, it did not live to my expectations. There are several small reasons and one big reason why this movie didn't work for me. The small reasons are the same issues I come across when watching ambitious low budget sci-fi movies;
1. There were times when the budget fell short of the directors vision - this was clear in the visual effect and set design.
2. There were some minor plot holes and sometimes clunky, on the nose writing.
3. Poor casting (e.g. they cast a 23-year-old to play an 18-year-old, and it showed).
However, as an indie filmmaker, I can easily look past all these items, in fact, I am very impressed that they managed to shoot a movie of this quality for a mere $1MM. However, the big issue for me was the tone. It felt like I watch two different movies, tonally speaking, with the first half being gritty and gory with vibes of Bringing Out the Dead, and the second half feeling like an adventure time travel movie with an almost comedic aspect.
Verdict: This movie did not meet my expectations, however, if you are looking for a unique movie experience that will stay with you, I still suggest that you give this one a go.
